The logistics company has opened its innovative charging park to the electric cars of employees and visitors to their headquarters near Münster/Osnabrück Airport. The highlight of "xSite" is the intelligent technology, the so-called dynamic load management. It ensures that the existing infrastructure is optimally used:
The digital energy platform XENON processes the buildings’ electricity consumption data and controls the charging of the electric vehicles. When the buildings’ power consumption decreases, more energy is used to charge the electric cars. The energy platform ensures that a certain consumption average, calculated in 15-minute periods, is not exceeded. In this way, the existing network connection is optimally used and the company saves effort and costs. To ensure that the batteries are full when the vehicles depart, the energy platform also includes the parking times of the electric vehicles, so that the charging of selected vehicles can be prioritized.
The intelligent charging park was realized for FIEGE under the management of E.ON. The energy provider is working on the project with its digital subsidiary gridX, of which it has acquired a majority share. gridX is the developer of the intelligent energy platform XENON. Additional project participants include the European Training Center for the Housing and real estate industry (EBZ), which is carrying out the data analysis, as well as RSW Technik from Buseck, responsible for the building energy management system at FIEGE.
The xSite dynamic load management project enters the practical phase with ten intelligent AC charging points that supply the electric cars of employees and visitors to FIEGE with up to 22 kW of E.ON green electricity. Two additional special DC charging points with 10 kW of power enable the cars to also be used as electricity storage as part of another pilot project by xSite: if the electric car is planned to remain at the charging station for a long time, the energy can be fed back from the batteries of the electric vehicles and be put to use elsewhere. These so-called bidirectional charging points are now entering the test phase, with results expected to be available at the beginning of next year.
Today, 50 percent of new orders in the FIEGE fleet are already electric-powered vehicles and over 35 percent of their locations feature charging stations – and that is just the beginning. FIEGE is currently working with E.ON on building new charging points at ten locations in Germany. The company has just signed a framework agreement for the further expansion of its charging infrastructure with the energy provider. The logistics service provider is planning to include charging points for all new construction projects, meaning their charging infrastructure is set to grow further.
Felix Fiege, Chief Executive Officer of the FIEGE Group, who runs the family business with his cousin Jens Fiege as part of the fifth generation, explains the opening of xSite: "as an innovative company, it is important for us, together with E.ON, to take e-mobility a step further with our charging park. Sustainability is a top priority for us. We want to promote sustainable behavior in our company, highlight climate-friendly alternatives, and provide employees and visitors easy access to e-mobility. For us, the xSite project is a building block for the logistics of the future and for intelligent, sustainable and economically strong mobility."
Mathias Wiecher, Vice President eMobility at E.ON SE, says, "together with our business customers, we want to make companies fit for the future. With FIEGE and our project partners, we are now successfully bringing an innovative, intelligent charging solution into the practical phase, which protects the climate and reduces costs for our customers. According to joint calculations, full utilization of the twelve charging points can save around 6,000 to 13,000 euros per year."
